track-by-track breakdown of the band's new album, "TH1RT3EN",
which will be released on November 1st.
A couple of excerpts follow below.
"Sudden Death":
Ellefson: "This is a track that was being worked on when I rejoined the band. I came in on a Friday, I played my part on a Saturday, and on Monday we put out the press release that I was back in Megadeth. So this song represents a real homecoming for me. Musically, I wanted to combine a New Wave Of British Heavy Metal and a thrash style in my bass playing. There's some great rhythmic work going on, particularly in the intro, and the riff, especially towards the end, gives me a chance to move up an octave and create tension underneath the guitars. All by itself, it's a very exciting song. But when I think about what it represents, it's deep on an emotional level."
"Public Enemy No. 1":
Ellefson: "We started writing this song during a soundcheck in Croatia last year, and we finished it in Vienna, Austria a short while later. Funnily enough, earlier this year we wrote another song on the record called'Never Dead' in the same venue in Austria. So that place has magic in it. Again, it's another New Wave Of British Heavy Metal-type song, at least as far as what I do. I loved the early Def Leppard records, and I'm copping a bit of a Rick Savage bass approach on it. I really tried to write around the vocals. I love to hear as much of the band, especially the vocals, when I record a bass part. As a player, I want to be the mortar between the blocks that glue the building together. Once the vocal melody developed, Johnny [K, producer] and I worked with Dave [Mustaine, guitar/vocals], and that allowed me to put down a strong bass part. It was a fun way to record. I had a lot of note choices available to me, and there's a cool moving bassline in the B section of the verse as well as the chorus. As a listener, none of that matters, but hopefully, you'll feel the song jump."
"Never Dead":
Ellefson: "When Dave first played me this riff, I was floored. It was so violent and in your face, it reminded me of the 'Peace Sells' album. In particular, it sounded a little like 'Good Mourning/Black Friday', but in a great new way. I loved it. What's funny is, Dave forgot about it for a while. We got together earlier this year to work on some stuff, and I reminded him about this one, and he couldn't remember it. Fortunately, he had recorded it on his BlackBerry, so he was able to find it. As soon as we all started playing it for real, we were like four little kids jumping around a room. It's such a strong riff. It's so huge, you can't help but get crazy when you hear it."

Megadeth filmed the "Public Enemy No. 1" video on September 17 in Santa Clarita, California. The clip was shot on a movie set where old Westerns are filmed.
"TH1RT3EN" was recorded at Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine'sVic's Garage studio in San Marcos, California with producer Johnny K(full name: John Karkazis), who has previously worked with Disturbed, Sevendust, Machine Head and Stained, among others. The artwork was once again created by artist John Lorenzi, who worked on the last two Megadeth`s studio albums, 2007's "United Abominations" and 2009's "Endgame", as well as the band's 2007 box set, "Warchest".
"TH1RT3EN" marks the recorded return of bassist David Ellefson who was part of the band's classic lineup from 1983 to 2002. In a move that delighted the band's legion of diehards, Ellefson returned to performing live with Megadeth in early 2010 and has remained a fixture on the stage ever since. This is the first time Ellefson has played on a Megadeth record since 2002's "Rude Awakening".

Voivod: In Pre-Production For New Album
According to a posting on the Voivod Facebook page, "the guys are recording a couple of news songs at their rehearsal spot. Expect something in the vein of 'Nothingface' with some elements from the other albums. It will be a classic Voivod album."
Regarding what the new Voivod songs sound like, Mongrain said in a recent interview, "As a Voivod fan since I am 12 years old and early rise of Voivod in late '80s and everything, I think… I'm in conflict of interest right now. [Laughs] I like the old stuff as much as the new stuff, so I think it's a blend of everything. It's really a team work and Blacky[Jean-Yves Thériault] is back on the 'blower bass' - he's got the original sound - and we're having a blast jamming, improvising and writing. I think it's working pretty good."
On the topic of the
lyrical themes covered in the new Voivod tracks,
singer Denis "Snake" Bélanger said, "The
song we played [on the recent European tour] ['Kaleidos'; see video
below] is about conspiracy involving drugs and the FBI…
[Laughs] It's hard to describe because we're kind of early in the
process. There's another song called 'Target Earth', which is
more like a spacy, conspiracy, controlling the information around the
world. The main thing is the 'war' of information. You know,
somebody Osama Bin Laden is dead, someone [else] says he's
not… It gets to a point where everybody has his own story and
nobody is sure what the truth is. There's people above everything
controlling the information."In a recent interview with Exclaim.ca, Away stated about Voivod's forthcoming studio album, "We have four songs completed and about five other ones in progress and it's more in the progressive metal vein, so it's reminiscent of the 'Dimension Hatross' era. We hope to record in the fall and have a new album out in the spring of 2012, so before the end of the world."On the topic of the new Voivod live album, "Warriors Of Ice", featuring three-fourths of the band's classic lineup - Langevin, bassistJean-Yves "Blacky" Thériault and vocalist Denis "Snake" Bélanger - along with Mongrain, Away said, "I feel like it's an achievement because there was a point where we weren't sure if there was going to be a new Voivod album. It's not a studio album but still something we're very proud of. It's good vintage Voivod. . . There was never really a live album with Snake and Blacky since the one before was us as a trio with [ex-bassist/vocalist] Eric Forrest. So, yeah, it's refreshing to have an album with almost the original lineup involved."
Regarding upcoming Voivod releases, Away stated, "There are no professional [unreleased] recordings in the vaults [with late Voivod guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour], but we are re-releasing a few albums in the upcoming months with bonus live material from the '80s."

recent partial leg amputation.
West has released the following statement regarding the tour postponement:
West has issued the following official statement: "To everyone involved on this tour. I am very sad today. I was so hoping this would happen. Everyone worked so hard, and it would have been FUN. Yeah, I wanted it to be fun. Unfortunately it was not being able to climb stairs, go to a simple thing like a bathroom on a tour bus, which is tight for a normal person, let alone me. I start training with my new leg Wednesday, so I can get back to a normal life.
"I do hope that everyone would consider doing West coast to East after NAMM. Bob [West's manager Bob Ringe] and Wayne [Forte at booking agency Entourage Talent Associates] think this is possible.
"If you guys think you would want to do this, I will work that much harder to learn to walk, which I will do anyway, but thought I would throw this in there."
West's leg was removed in late June just above the knee due to complications from diabetes. "I cried a couple fuckin' times," he toldBillboard.com. "You still feel the nerves and stuff like that. I had to make a decision — lose my leg or lose my life. What are you gonna do? But I'll tell you, it's a good thing it wasn't one of my arms. Then I'd be really fucked."

set a November 7 release date for a new Whitesnake box set
entitled "Box O'Snakes: The Sunburst Years 1978-1982".

a collection of re-recorded versions of the band's classics songs, on
November 4th via Sony. The effort will be made available as a CD
and on double vinyl.
In a recent interview with ArabNews.com, Scorpions frontman Klaus Meine stated about the group's future plans, "Our newest project comes out in the next few months. It gives you a chance to experience the Scorpions in 3D. You can actually feel the smoke string out of the guitar like it is a live show. It is an incredible experience. The DVD features our concerts in 3D in Germany. We are just about to do the mix and it should be in the Middle East and Saudi Arabia hopefully soon. Indeed, the strong 3D technology makes us feel like pioneers after all these years. (Laughs) We have an album coming out later this year featuring classics. You know our love for them. The '60s was the era for our inspiration. Our movie/documentary also is soon to be released. We have cameras with us on tours, so this documentary is being made during or tours. It also gives you a picture of the Scorpions career and journey."

Accept: Working on New Album; To Be Released Spring 2012
Following
the tremendous success of Accept's comeback album, "Blood
Of The Nations", and accompanying world tour - which consisted
of more than 180 shows around the globe - the reformed heavy metal
legends have now withdrawn from the stage to start work on their next
CD.
The band is currently writing material for its new LP, which will be released in the spring of 2012 and will once again be helmed by British producer Andy Sneap (Megadeth,Exodus,Nevermore, Arch Enemy).
Commented Accept guitarist Wolf Hoffman: "Accept and Andy Sneap have the perfect synergy. This was so clear with 'Blood Of The Nations' and we are excited to continue on that path. Andy is not only an amazing and prolific producer but also a very good friend who has long become a member of the Accept family."

Steven Tyler Joined by Jeff Beck and Sting On Stage in Las Vegas(Video)
Steven
Tyler was quite the popular ringleader last weekend when he hit the
stage of Las Vegas’ MGM Grand to rock the iHeartRadio festival, a
star-studded two-day bash marking the launch of the new iHeartRadio
application. He was joined during his sets by a string of all-star
collaborators, including Jeff Beck and
sultry ‘X Factor’ judge Nicole Scherzinger.
Tyler
performed four songs with Jeff Beck, including covers of the Kinks ‘
‘You Really Got Me’ and Sly and the Family Stone’s ‘Thank You
(Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).’ That second tune also featured
original Family Stone member Cynthia Robinson, who raised the roof
with her surprise appearance (on a potentially sad side
note, reports suggest
reclusive Family Stone legend and namesake Sly Stallone is homeless
and living in a van in Los Angeles).
After
the success of their performance, could another Beck/Tyler
collaboration be in the pair’s future? “The rest is yet to
reveal,” Tyler told RollingStone.com.
“If I had my way, I’d say yes. We did ‘Cry Me a River’ and an
Etta James song. [We] went to rehearsal to learn these four songs.
Two we knew and we just wound up filling in the breaks with all kinds
of crazy stuff.”
For
his part, Beck was stoked to share the stage with the Aerosmith
singer. “Big gigs are not my thing for the sound purposes, but when
you’ve got [Tyler] there he carries the weight, 100 percent,”
Beck said. “I enjoyed the fact that everybody was digging what he
was doing, so my job was a lot easier.”
Sting
joined Tyler for a rousing rendition of Aerosmith’s “Sweet
Emotion” that kicked off the second night, and Scherzinger
followed for a take on his solo hit, ‘Feels So Good.’
Despite reports that Tyler was annoyed with his original placement on
the bill (he wouldn’t say exactly where he was supposed to be),
leading off the show turned out to be the perfect slot. “When you
know you’re gonna slam ass you go on first,” Beck raved. “I
love the way you’re thinking.”
Meanwhile,
backstage in Vegas, Tyler backed up Aerosmith bassist Todd
Hamilton’s recent
claim that
the band is eying a spring 2012 release for its next album. “Two
months [recording] and we’re almost there,” Tyler said. “We’re
gonna spend another month [recording] in Los Angeles … [it'll be
out by] March, hopefully.”
Ozzy Osbourne: "God Bless Ozzy Osbourne" On DVD in November
'God Bless Ozzy Osbourne' was shot by Ozzy's youngest child and son, Jack Osbourne, over the course of three years. It tells the story of Ozzy through Jack's perspective and black spectacles.
Topics like his Black Sabbath career, first marriage, fame and drug addiction are tackled in the film. Fans also see the family man side of the Prince of Darkness.

Scorpions: Herman Rarebell Talks New Autobiography "And Speaking of Scorpions..."
The
French Scorpions fan
club Crazyscorps recently
conducted an interview with the band's former drummer, Herman
Rarebell.
During the chat, Rarebell spoke
about his new autobiography entitled "And
Speaking Of Scorpions…",
his chaotic beginnings with the band, the state of the world and his
regrets as an absent father. You can now listen to the interview in
three parts below.
"And
Speaking of Scorpions..." is
tentatively scheduled for release in the fall. A press/media tour
will take place in late October through early November to coincide
with the book's release.
Commented Herman:
"This is the all-too true story of one of the greatest rock and
roll bands of the 1980s. But unlike so many autobiographies written
these days, I decided to write it for you the fans. No, not just the
fans in North America as it's already being portrayed in the media
because of the fact, I suspect, it's written in English. It is

since it is for you, rather than focus on all the ordinary array of
things such offerings tend to make so predominant, once you open this
book be prepared to have the most fun you can legally have anywhere

Shrewdly concealed within this autobiography is not
only what can be considered the quintessential, definitive history of
arguably the greatest band of their era, but also a masterful weaving
of some of the most entertaining wit, whimsy and sage wisdom ever
shared within the covers of a simple book. Sure to be considered a
masterpiece by those who have a love of tongue in cheek irony and
satire, not to mention great storytelling, it raises the bar for such
offerings to a decidedly new level. With his endless anecdotes and
tales, Herman draws
the lines that led to the group's ascension to the "Mount
Olympus of rock music," while his co-writer, Michael
Krikorian,
clearly lends his assistance to color them in, providing more hues
and tones than Crayola ever put in a box of crayons. Together, they
set a table and serve up a banquet of sarcasm and memories truly fit
for a king! (The King of Monaco to be precise.) There are no sacred
cherubs spared from the harpoon of a master yarn-spinner, as the
puns, innuendo and endless wordplay are meant to entertain and
lampoon much of the history not only of an incredible band but also
of a generation. Though having none of the calories but plenty of the
guilt, the frankness and honesty expressed upon each sinfully
delicious page will never spoil your appetite but will only leave you
yearning for more.

Chickenfoot: "III" Streaming on Spotify
Chickenfoot's
brand new album, "Chickenfoot III", is available for

DIO: "Sacred Heart" 2CD Deluxe Edition Out in November

to CDJapan.co.jp, Universal has
set a November 16th Japanese release date for the deluxe edition
of DIO's 1985 album, "Sacred Heart". The reissue
features the high-fidelity SHM-CD format (compatible with standard CD
players) and cardboard sleeve jacket. It includes a bonus disc with
live tracks, B-sides and more and is part of a two-albumDIO SHM-CD

"On the Road"

Called "On
The Road",
this takes a look at the crazy guys behind the scenes who make the
tours happen – the road crew! It’s co-presented by Jesse Hughes
from The Eagles Of Death Metal and Tim Harrington on Les Savy Fav;
each will present six episodes. It’s co-produced by Vice magazine
with Marshall Headphones.
Iron Maiden: 30 Years Since Bruce Dickinson Joined Today
When
Iron Maiden signed to a major label in December 1979, it seemed like
they were just about there. The line-up of Harris, guitarist Dave
Murray, second guitarist Dennis Stratton, drummer Clive Burr and
singer Paul Di’Anno was a pretty fearsome group. Stratton and
Murray provided a complementing, give-and-take twin-guitar attack.
Burr was a more-than-solid drummer. Harris was quickly developing
into the best bassist in heavy metal. And Di’Anno…well, Di’Anno
was something else.
Paul
Di’Anno was not your prototypical singer. His voice was raspy and
harsh, though he could fire off a top-shelf scream when necessary.
But Rob Halford he was not. Di’Anno, though, brought a toughness to
a band that was built for menace. In songs like “Phantom of the
Opera” and “Murders in the Rue Morgue,” you get the feeling
you’re hearing the story from the killer himself.
Di’Anno
sang on the band’s first two albums, «Iron
Maiden» and «Killers»,
and on the live EP, «Maiden
Japan».
And the band met with some early success. Their 1980 self-titled
debut went to #4 in the U.K. charts. The follow-up, 1981’s «Killers»,
only made it as far as #12, but helped to break the band in America.
It was on the Killers tour where the group first ventured to the
States, but the tour would also prove to be the end of the Di’Anno
era.
The
band, which now included guitarist Adrian Smith (after Stratton’s
dismissal), were growing more and more frustrated with their singer.
His voice couldn’t hold up to extensive touring or long shows. More
to the point, the band found his behavior erratic and detrimental,
which they attributed to cocaine and alcohol abuse (a charge Di’Anno
vehemently denies). Regardless, on the verge of making it big, the
band decided to jettison Di’Anno in favor of a singer more suited
for the road and the rigors of playing with Maiden.
Bruce
Dickinson was just the man for the job. The former Samson frontman
(known as “Bruce Bruce” in those heady days) had just parted ways
with his old band, amid a cascade of management and record label
problems. Dickinson was a hilarious ball of energy, and he had no
patience for guys who were content to squander their opportunities by
getting high. He’d had enough of that in Samson. And while he
wasn’t a military starch-shirt like his dad, he did have a drive to
succeed.
Dickinson
auditioned for Iron Maiden in September 1981 and immediately got the
job (on this very day in 1981). His powerful voice was well suited
for the material the band was cooking up for their next release.
Though Dickinson was contractually forbidden to take part in the
songwriting for the new album (because of his old Samson deal), he
nevertheless offered a “moral contribution.” And that next album
would, indeed, propel Maiden and Dickinson to the top of the metal
world. «The
Number of the Beast» went
to #1 in the U.K. and was the first Iron Maiden album to chart in the
U.S., going to #33.
Though
the band would have a handful of other line-up changes in subsequent
years, this was the one that had the most lasting impact. When “Bruce
Bruce” met Eddie and friends, a monster was born.
