Led Zeppelin: "Physical Graffiti"; Classic Album Under Review

This film is a documentary film about the buildup, making, release, and crucially music contained on this most revered of albums. With the aid of rare and classic performances, scarce interviews, seldom seen photographs and contributions from those involved in the making of the record plus the review and critique from a panel of Led Zeppelin experts, this program finally lifts the lid on what many believe to be Led Zeps very finest offering.

"Physical Graffiti" is the sixth studio album by Led Zeppelin. It is a double album which was released on 24 February 1975. Recording sessions for the album were initially disrupted when John Paul Jones considered leaving the band. After reuniting at Headly Grange, the band wrote and recorded eight songs, the combined length of which stretched the album beyond the typical length of an LP. This prompted the band to make "Physical Graffiti" a double album by including previously unreleased tracks from earlier recording sessions.

"Physical Graffiti" was a great success; the album is 16 times platinum (though this signifies shipping of 8 million copies, as it is a double album) in the United States alone, and has come to be regarded as one of Led Zeppelin's defining works. The album is ranked highly on several prominent best album or best rock album lists of all time.

Joe Satriani: "Unstoppable Momentum"; New Solo Album Coming May 7

Joe Satriani has issued the following update:

"Now that the asteroid has safely passed us by, I feel it's time to break my cyberspace silence and let you all know what I've been up to these last few months.

"After returning home from the last of three incredible G3 tours, I got down to writing music for a new solo record. A very prolific and cathartic two months followed resulting in a bundle of new music I was very excited to get recorded.

"With 16 of the songs selected for the project, all heading in different directions and touching on a variety of musical influences, I realized I needed to assemble a new studio band. The idea was to crank up the energy level of the sessions, and allow for more individual expression of the material, from each player. I pulled into Skywalker Sound with Mike Keneally on keyboards, Chris Chaney on bass and Vinnie Colaiuta on drums. The chemistry between these awesome players was fantastic, and we blazed through all the tracks with everyone laying down amazing performances.

"On Valentine's Day I finally finished all the overdubs, reviewed the tracks with engineer/producer Mike Fraser and started loading out of the studio, elated! Now it's on to Vancouver, British Columbia, to mix.

"The new record will be called 'Unstoppable Momentum' and should see a release date of May 7th. I'm not sure how many songs will make it to the final sequence as I still have a lot of work ahead of me in that department.

"As you can see from the tour page [on my official web site], we are gearing up to bring the new music on tour starting in mid-May and continuing through 2013. My touring band will consist of Mike Keneally on keys and guitar, Bryan Beller on bass, and Marco Minnemann on drums. I'm so excited about tearing it up on stage with this new band! See you out there on tour..."

Tony Iommi, Brain May Working On "Riffs" Album

Few musicans turn down having Tony Iommi  backing them up, and soon more bands will get the chance. The guitarist has a treasure trove of riffs laying around, unused, in his studio. Brian May has inspired Iommi to put them to good use.

In a recent interview with Kerrang!, May talks about the riffs album the two were working on. “The idea was to put all these riffs out in some form so that people could build their own songs from them,” he says (quote via NME.com). “You could make your own music with Tony Iommi on guitar!”

Black Sabbath: New Album Sounds Like Satanic Blues, According to Ozzy Osbourne; Video Snippet From Studio Posted

Although Ozzy Osbourne describes the new album as "Satanic blues," Iommi's illness isn't the only thing that's changed about Sabbath. Osbourne admits he is no longer the "crazy, raging alcoholic drug addict" he was during the making of his last Sabbath record, 1978's "Never Say Die". ("It should've been called I Wish I Was Dead," he grumbles.) And even a new Sabbath song like the provocatively titled "God Is Dead" takes an unexpected turn. "It starts off, 'God is dead,'" Osbourne says, before adding a bit wistfully, "but at the end it says, 'I don't believe that God is dead.'"

In a nod to their roots, tracks like "End Of The Beginning" and "Age of Reason" stretch out to as long as eight minutes. "I don't know what's going on in the music world," Osbourne says. "My wife mentions bands to me and I don't know what the fuck she's talking about. We just do what we always did."

Always-controversial producer Rick Rubin wanted Cream drummer Ginger Baker to replace Bill Ward in Black Sabbath, guitarist Tony Iommi has revealed.

Black Sabbath: Mixing New Album In February, Says Geezer Butler In New Video Interview

Eddie Trunk conducted an interview with bassistGeezer Butler for Hartke at this year's NAMM. You can now watch the chat below. A few excerpts from the chat follow.

On the new Black Sabbath album:

Geezer: "We've finished recording it. Tony's back in England putting down a couple of solos. Then we start mixing it in Febraury and it will be out in June.

"The provisional title is '13' - unless we can come up with something more constructive."

On Black Sabbath's touring plans:

Geezer: "We start at the end of April in New Zealand, then we go to Australia, then Japan. June, we'll be promoting the album, then July and August [is] USA. Then October is South America and Europe in November and December."

On how it feels to be back working with Ozzy Osbourne again:

Geezer: "It's great. We just have a lot of laughs and lot of fun."

On whether he has contributed lyrics to the new album, like he has in the past:

Geezer: "Yeah, I've written most of the lyrics. Ozzy comes up with the titles and then gives me an inspiration to write the lyrics. I think we've got 16 songs and I've written 14 sets of lyrics."

On his plans to release another solo album:

Geezer: "When I finish this cycle for the Sabbath touring and album and everything else, we'll start work on the next GZR album. There's a lot of material written. It's just getting the time to record it. It'll probably be sometime next year."
