Black Sabbath: Tony Iommi Talks "13"

Paul Cole of Birmingham Mail recently conducted an interview with Tony Iommi. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On Black Sabbath's new album, "13", and upcoming tour:

Tony Iommi: "The recording and rehearsals have been going very well indeed.
There's a really good feeling about it all."

"We're very pleased with the new album. But after all the work in the studio it will be good to get out and do some shows."

"I have to admit that [the new Black Sabbath album is] not what I expected. I could never have imagined that the album would turn out so well, but it has."

"I think it sits comfortably with our first three albums - 'Black Sabbath','Paranoid' and 'Master Of Reality' - and I think it's one you'll like."

"We wanted it to sound like the way we played in our early days, back to basics, and we recorded pretty much all of it almost live as a band.

"We didn't want to go through the usual trip of recording the drums, the guitars and the vocals separately. So we played together."

"We'd also written more songs than we ever have for previous recording sessions. There are 16 tracks in total, and all of them will appear in some form or other on the album when it is released. There will be different versions, including a deluxe edition."

On his relationship with Ozzy Osbourne:

Tony Iommi: "The truth is that Ozzy and I have never really fallen out personally.
When there have been issues, it has been purely business. Even when there has been a problem we've carried on talking. There's never been a bad vibe. "

"Ozzy was the one who kept on at me to go to the doctors because he was concerned about me, and he has been very supportive since I was diagnosed [with lymphoma]. In fact, all the guys in the band have been great."

"Even now, when we arrive at the studio they ask how I'm feeling, if I'm up to it, making sure that I'm OK."

Black Sabbath: "God Is Dead?"; Digital Single Available April 19

"God Is Dead?", a brand new single from Black Sabbath, will be made available digitally on April 19.

God is Dead? (8:54). This song slays. Very cool riffing and a good melody line. The B section is evocative of the Holy in the Sky riff but it still works really well. This is an excellent song, worthy of standing with anything in the Ozzy catalog (thought it lacks the instant memorability of Iron Man or Paranoid).

"13":
01. "End Of The Beginning" (8:07)
02. "God Is Dead?" (8:54)
03. "Loner" (5:06)
04. "Zeitgeist" (4:28)
05. "Age Of Reason" (7:02)
06. "Live Forever" (4:49)
07. "Damaged Soul" (7:43)
08. "Dear Father" (7:06)

Black Sabbath: "13"; Cover Artwork Unveiled; New Audio Snippet Available

Black Sabbath`s new album, "13" will be released on June 11. The drum tracks on the group's first LP with Osbourne since 1978 were laid down by Rage Against The Machine sticksman Brad Wilk following original drummer Bill Ward's decision to bow out of the reunion.

The cover artwork for "13", along with a snippet of a new song from the CD, can be seen in the YouTube clip below.

Osbourne, Iommi and Butler recorded the album primarily in Los Angeles with producer Rick Rubin. Songtitles set to appear on the CD include three seven-plus-minute behemoths "End Of The Beginning", "God Is Dead" and"Epic", as well as a track about killing pedophile priests ("Dear Father") and another about the scourge of methamphetamine addiction ("Methademic").

Iommi said about the album, "You can't always repeat what you've done, you've just got to go on. It'll be today's version of how it was 40 years ago, I suppose."

Ozzy stated, "This Black Sabbath album is quite possibly the most important album of my career," while Butleradded, "We'll probably all be dead soon, so while we still can play and sing, then we've got to do it."

"13" is available for pre-order on a variety of formats via BlackSabbath.com.

Ozzy Osbourne recently said to Australia`s Triple M radio station: "The album is mindblowing, [that's] how good it is. I'm so over the moon about the way the album turned out. We wrote 16 songs … and I put it on my CD player, expecting me to be unhappy with the end result, but this big grin came on my face and my hair on the back on my neck [stood up] … It's better than my wildest dreams; it's so good."

He continued: "People have been quoting me that this album was quite possibly the most important album of my career. What I meant by that is I didn't want it to sound like a follow-up to 'Never Say Die!', 'cause that was when we were dying out within the band."
