Deep Purple: Steve Morse Talks Career In New Interview; Bob Ezrin To Produce Next Deep Purple Album
According
to Deep Purple guitarist Steve
Morse, the next Purple album will be produced by the legendary Bob Ezrin.
He tells GlideMagazine.com,
"[This next CD is] probably going to be more of an extravaganza.
Everybody realizes we're not going to do this forever, so to me it
feels like this is a really important album to do well."
Read more excerpts below:
GM:
What do you have planned for the rest of the year?
Steve Morse: In a couple of weeks, Deep Purple has a writing session and we’re producing an album with Bob Ezrin, who’s done KISS, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Alice Cooper, and he also worked on the last Kansas album, when I was with Kansas. So he’s one of my favorite producers and that’s going to be our studio album. It’s probably going to be more of an extravaganza. Everybody realizes we’re not going to do this forever, so to me it feels like this is a really important album to do well. So we’ve got that coming up and mixed in with that, and that is most of the summer with the album, and then I have to leave when they’re doing vocals on that to do the G3 tour. Then I have to come back, repack my suitcase and we go out with Flying Colors and the plan is to do a couple weeks in the US and then a couple weeks in Europe. That brings us to the end of September. Oops, I’m late for the G3 tour and got to get on a plane to go down to South America. Then before they go to Mexico, I have to leave the tour to come back and go straight to Russia with Deep Purple. Then I may have to come back from Russia all the way to the US and repack my suitcase and go back for another five weeks in Europe. Then it’s Christmas and then another year has gone (laughs).

SAGA: "20/20"; New Studio Album Featuring Michael Sadler Out In July; Album Artwork, Track List Revealed
Legendary
Canuck prog-rockers SAGA will release their new album, "20/20", on July
6th via earMUSIC. The ten-track opus commemorates vocalist Michael
Sadler’s return to the band. The title "20/20" first of all refers to
the album being the 20th of Saga, but in addition it’s a good luck
wish to keyboardist Jim Gilmour, who had to undergo an eye operation
during Saga’s latest European tour. "20/20" stands for the perfect
eyesight.
20/20
tracklisting:
'Six Feet Under'
'Anywhere You Wanna Go'
'Ellery'
'Spin It Again'
'Another Day Out Of Sight'
'One Of These Days'
'Ball And Chain'
'Lost For Words'
'Show And Tell'
'Till The Well Runs Dry'
According to a press release, with striking keyboard sounds and Michael Sadler’s stunning vocals, the album has all that it takes to become an instant fan favourite as well as a worldwide hit. The opener "Six Feet Under" features a dominant keyboard sound, roaring guitars and a chorus you can’t get out of your head. Followed by the catchy, high energy driven "Anywhere You Wanna Go", SAGA clarify that their original trademark sound is still going strong. The emotional ballad "Lost For Words" once again demonstrates Sadler’s incredible vocal range.
Michael Sadler reflects his return to the band: “One thing that we agreed on was that, if and when I ever were to return, it would have to feel like it was exactly the right thing to do and exactly the right time to do it!”
"20/20" will be available on standard CD and special edition, a premium CD+DVD digipak edition. The exclusive DVD follows the studio recordings of "20/20" and gives a great insight behind the scenes of creating and recording a modern classic.
Following the new release will be summer and fall dates in Canada, USA, Europe and South America. The shows also celebrate the 30th anniversary of the band's 1983 album, "Heads Or Tales".

Uriah Heep: New Interview With Trevor Bolder Available
For
Bass Players Only recently sat down with Trevolr Bolder of Uriah Heep
for a chat. Read excerpts below:
FBPO:
How would you describe your musical upbringing?
TB: I
come from a family of musicians. I started playing trumpet when I was
9. This allowed me to join a brass band and start my musical
upbringing and understanding. I also soloed on the cornet, which is a
similar role to that of a solo violinist. When the Beatles came
along, however, I thought I would take up the guitar. I joined my
brother’s band, but, because he was on the guitar – and I was the
youngest – I was assigned the bass. Looking back, it was the best
move I ever made!
FBPO:
Can you identify a turning point in your life where you realized,
undoubtedly, that you were going to make a career out of music?
TB: Ever
since the age of 12, I’ve always wanted a career in music. I was
going to join the military so I could play in the military band,
however, my mother would not allow me. Thankfully, along came rock &
roll!

Black
Sabbath is
one of the most influential rock bands of all time. According to
the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame,
"The success of their first two albums 'Black
Sabbath' and 'Paranoid' marked
a paradigm shift in the world of rock. Not until Black Sabbath
upended the music scene did the term 'heavy metal' enter the popular
vocabulary to describe the denser, more thunderous offshoot of rock
over which they presided."
Following
the release of their self-titled debut album in 1970, "The
Original" Black
Sabbath have
gone on to release eight acclaimed studio albums and sell
over seventy
million albums worldwide.
In 2005 the band were inducted into the U.K
Music Hall of Fame byAngus
Young of AC/DC.
This was followed by their induction in 2006 into the U.S
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,
an honor bestowed on them by Metallica's
James Hetfield and Lars
Ulrich.
Black Sabbath will headline the legendary Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago this August before returning to the studio to finish recording their long-awaited studio album.

David Lee Roth Working On Acoustic Album
David
Lee Roth are working on an acoustic album according to Ultimate Classic Rock:
Current Rob Zombie guitarist
and longtime Roth associate John 5 tells Guitar
World that
he and David Lee Roth recently laid down an entire album’s worth of acoustic
songs with two of Roth’s "Skyscraper"-era bandmates: drummer Gregg Bissonette and keyboardist Brett Tuggle.
John 5 says that the new material is anything
but boring. He says that it’s not “strummy, campfire stuff,”
but instead “lots of cool, crazy jazz chords” and “50 or 60
overdubbed guitar tracks with all this harmonizing and other weird
stuff going on.”
There
are about a dozen songs completed and John 5 says that Dave is in
good form, calling his vocals “incredible” and saying that he
“sings his ass off.”
John
5 notes that “Dave obviously has his plate full right now with Van
Halen, but hopefully this record will get released one of these
days.”
Diamond
Dave and John 5 first worked together when Roth hired the guitarist,
who was then known as John Lowery, to play on his fifth solo album,
credited to the DLR Band and released in 1998.
Lowery
was working with Rob Halford at
that point, something that was of little concern to Roth.
Roth
said, “Here’s what I wanna do. I wanna go into the studio and I
wanna cut this record just like the old Van Halen days - just knock
it out.” John replied, “That’s great, Mr. Roth. Only I’m
rehearsing for a tour with Rob Halford.”
Roth replied: “No problem. But I wanna have
you fresh every day, so what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna start
recording at 6 a.m. Then afterward, you can go do your other thing!”

Motörhead: New Audio Interview With Lemmy Available
Mike
Jones of
the Washington D.C. radio station DC101 recently
conducted an interview with Motörhead mainman
Lemmy. You can now listen to the chat using the audio player below.
Sweden's Aftonbladet newspaper
reported last weekend that Motörhead's signature wine made - which
made its debut in Sweden in 2010 - has sold more than 250,000 bottles
since it was launched.
When
asked how the idea for Motörhead Shiraz came
about, Lemmy said
in a recent interview, "Well, the company takes care of the
business end and all I have to worry about is the quality. I am not
going to sell shit to people, you know. We have a wine as well, that
is very good. It was really simple how I got into it. This guy came
up and said, 'You know, you could make money if we make this wine.' I
said, 'Okay.' I think it is a California wine or it might be Spanish,
I don't know. The vodka is Swedish."

Q: You said earlier that you turned quite a few bands down – can you name those?
A: "One was a group called Sam Apple Pie. One was a group called East of Eden and another one was Renaissance . But it was all very cordial. Funny thing was I’d been turned down for UFO during that period! (laughs) They had this nutter of a manager. This guy, I think he could have been put inside, you know, put away from people. He auditioned people for UFO, but all the audition was was basically their haircuts and what jackets they wore. It could have been the greatest guitar player in the world, but if you didn’t have the right haircut he would not consider you. But they’d seen my CV at the time and after they fired this manager they did contact me to say ‘we’re still looking for a guitarist, would you come and audition?’ For years Phil said, very Phil Mogg, he said, ‘We only gave him the gig because he had a Gibson Firebird and it looked cool!’ (laughs) And he’s probably right! (laughs) We become friends over the years and [they] say, ‘You was an arrogant little sod when you was a kid!’ It wasn’t really arrogance, I just didn’t want to do something. Just waiting for the right band to come along really."
Geeks of Doom: And that right band turned out to be Whitesnake…
A: "Well, eventually. But there was two or three in between. Like I said there was Wild Turkey then I met Cozy Powell and that’s when Cozy asked me to put the band together with him which became Hammer and after that I went with a group called Babe Ruth. Paice, Ashton & Lord was my first big jump up. I suppose Cozy Powell was in retrospect because he was [in] that kind of class as a musician that I hadn’t played with before, he was so good, and then when I went into Paice, Ashton & Lord there was Ian Paice on the same level and Jon Lord on a higher level. That’s what really whetted me and I thought, ‘hang on, I’m building the right bricks here, it’s going well.’ Paice, Ashton & Lord was my big break really because I moved into what I call the Premier League. When you’re getting picked up in Rolls-Royce’s and not in Transit vans you know something has changed! (laughs) That was what it was like with Jon and Ian and musically of course it was great. The late Tony Ashton was there as well. Musically it was great but they were pretty much depending on me to be one of the major writers so obviously that appealed as well."

KISS: "Shut Up And Play Love Gun"; PodKISSt #58 Available
"Love
Gun" is
the sixth studio album by KISS. "Love Gun" is
notable for being the first KISS album to feature a lead vocal
performance from Ace Frehley. This marks the first album for
the group to feature lead vocal performances from all four band
members. It was also the last studio album to feature the entire
original lineup of KISS on every track, as drummer Peter Criss was
replaced by session drummer Anton Fig for most of 1979's "Dynasty".
PodKISSt
has arranged a round-table discussion about "Love Gun":
Description:
"BANG!
It's PodKISSt time! Here's part one... no, SIDE ONE... of our
long-awaited and much-requested round-table discussion of 1977′s

Lita Ford has teamed up with producer Gary Hoey and lyricist Michael Dan Ehmig to work on "Living Like a Runaway". Together the team invested a lot of time and effort into this kick-ass project.
"We worked on the lyrics intensively to really give the songs a lot of meaning and that special emotional depth," says Lita. "I think that these are some of the best lyrics ever, period." Ford is referring to numbers such as "Devil In My Head", "Hate" and "The Asylum", which see her bare her soul in a way which she has never done before.
