Gibson.com’s Greatest Metal Songs of All Time

Defining Metal music is never easy but for this all time list, Gibson.com opted to leave bands like Led Zeppelin and Queen in the hard rock camp and concentrate on the heavier metal sounds – Iron Maiden, Sabbath, Metallica and the like. Gibson.com recently called upon its editors, writers and – most importantly – readers, to weigh in on the greatest metal songs of all time.

After all the votes were tallied, we were left with the Top 50 Greatest Metal Songs of All Time, and we’re revealing the first 10 songs today. Check back each day this week as Gibson.com unveils 10 more metal monsters, with the Top 10 coming on Friday.

# 50:

“10,000 Days (Wings Part II”) is a crash course in everything that makes Tool great -intertwining bass parts, crunching guitar riffs, airy arpeggiations, building tensions, hypnotic vocal phrasing from Maynard James Keenan, and prog-inspired dynamic shifts. The song breaks down for a mournful, Crimson-esque solo by Adam Jones, then crashes back into monster riffage once again before demonstrating another of the band's signature seamless dynamic shifts. It's a lesson in how to pack a track with atmosphere and power, darkness and light.
