The Mezmerist: Featuring Bill Ward Coming In September

The Mezmerist is one of the most mysterious US metal releases of all time. Nobody even knows who The Mezmerist is, and to even find an original LP was a chore because the band held on to a lot of the pressing. Originally there was only 500 copies made back in 1985, today those copies have gone for extremely high prices on eBay.

With this re-issue, scheduled for September 3rd via Shadow Kingdom Records, this is basically the first time anyone who knew about this lost gem made contact with the band. The label got lucky finding the mastermind behind the group, Thomas Mezmercardo. Since contacting him, they ended up taking an additional five years to put this release out properly and with all of the parties and work involved. Speaking of all parties involved, one of the most interesting things about this release is that Bill Ward of Black Sabbath did in fact play drums on this release. He played on the first four tracks on the first EP.

The circumstances surrounding the events back then are somewhat of a mystery, even to this day. Thomas sits down and tells the story of how all of this came together on the DVD portion of the release. This is not just any old over-hyped cult release. This is the definition of the perfect lost gem in '80s heavy metal history. It’s too hard to exactly pinpoint what this sounds like, but if you have to label it, call it psychedelic heavy metal. Close to Led Zeppelin, Cirith Ungol and Mercyful Fate, the release is a double EP - released as a full-length album.

1st EP circa 1983
'The Forsaken'
'Dead Ones Cry No More'
'Arabian Nights'
'Victim Of Environmental Change'

2nd EP circa 1985
'Kingdom Of The Dead'
'No Family, No Friends'

'The Jam Song'

Steven Tyler To Record Solo Album

Steven Tyler has revealed to RollingStone.com that he will begin work on his debut solo album in early 2014.

"Joe has done, like, four solo albums,"Steven said. "I never have, though with lyrics and arrangements and so forth a lot of Aerosmith albums are just fine for me. It's cathartic. But I had a lot of fun doing '(It) Feels So Good'. I wrote that with Marti Frederiksen.

"I've got this itch in me to do a solo record, and that's what I'm gonna do next. I've got some great people that want to get involved in it.

"It's early on right now, but that's the itch I got. I got that itch to do something that's a lot different than
Aerosmith.  Aerosmith s never been better, but we did that album. This last album was an Aerosmith all-for-one-and-one-for-all. But my heart is in stuff like that weirder, off-the-cuff stuff that I'm not sure Aerosmith would like.

"I'm into electronica - I was when I used to listen to Stockhausen in '65. So there's just a lot of stuff - good, weird fucking music that I want to get off my chest. The band will be playing, and we're going to China and Singapore. It's gonna open up a whole new world for
Aerosmith  So Aerosmith will always be around, but I got this itch and I know how to scratch it."

Black Sabbath´s Future "Depends on Tony", Says Ozzy Osbourne

Andrew Perry of The Telegraph recently conducted an interview with Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler. A couple of excerpts from the Osbourne portion of the chat follow below.

On the chart success of Black Sabbath's new album, "13":

Ozzy: "I knew it was a fucking good album, but when somebody just told me it's gone top in fifty countries - I didn't know there were fifty countries, and I'm number one in all of them! I'm just devastated."

On why
Black Sabbath's initial attempt to record together around again eleven years ago failed:

Ozzy: "[It was because of] my ego - I was riding on this fucking cloud of being television's new megastar for five minutes. I was doing well on my own, so it took me a while to get that balanced out in my head. I mean, it's not Ozzy Osbourne and
Black Sabbath  It's fucking Black Sabbath  It's different from me doing my own thing."

On whether the touring cycle for "13" will mark the end of
Black Sabbath:

Ozzy: "It depends on Tony. At the moment, we're doing so many weeks on the road, then he has to go back for more treatment [after being diagnosed with lymphoma]. He's had chemo and radiotherapy, and now he's on a thing to boost his immune system. I really hope it's gone for good. I'm sure it has. But you never know with that stuff."

Whatever their deadly sin - be it lust, greed, abuse of winged creatures or murder most foul - these prodigiously talented hellraisers have all come dangerously close to the edge. Tragically, not all of them have returned. Between tragic saint and raucous survivor, the line remains perilously thin.

"People ask me how I'm still alive and I don't know what to say", Ozzy once shrugged. "Cemetery Gates" provides the heaviest answer you'll find this side of heaven.

Black Sabbath: BBC Radio 1's Rock Show (June 3) Interview Posted Online

The June 3rd edition of BBC Radio 1's Rock Show with Daniel P. Carter is available below. The Black Sabbath special features interviews with Sabbath members Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, discussing their new album, "13":

Alice Cooper: "Super Duper Alice Cooper"; Documentary To Premiere On Toronto Int. Film Festival

"Super Duper Alice Cooper", the upcoming documentary about the shock rocker's evolution from preacher's son to superstardom, is currently being screened for programmers at the Toronto International Film Festival. The 97-minute retrospective on Alice Cooper is the latest release from Canadian documentarians Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen of production company Banger Films ("Metal: A Headbangers Journey", "Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage") and writer/director Reginald Harkema.

Official "Super Duper Alice Cooper" description: "Preacher's son Vincent Furnier struck fear into the hearts of parents as Alice Cooper, the ultimate rock star of the bizarre. From his advent as frontman for a group from Phoenix in the Sixties, to the notorious celebrity and decadence in the Seventies, to the comeback as glam metal godfather in the Eighties, we watch as Alice and Vincent battle for each other’s souls. This is a young Frankenstein who created a monster, lost control of it, and conquered it before it killed him. Alice Cooper is portrayed as a reflection of his fans' unease about the era and an escape from their generational malaise. His struggle revolved around living up to these expectations and being true to himself."

In a 2012 interview with Spinner.com, Dunn stated about the Cooper documentary, "We know Alice through various projects that we've done," he said. "We interviewed Alice for 'Headbanger's Journey'. He's also featured pretty prominently in two episodes of [the new groundbreaking documentary series] 'Metal Evolution', both in [the] Shock Rock and Early Metal U.S. [episodes]. He's a pretty fascinating character, who has been through a lot in his life. He's one of those musicians that maybe he hasn't had a hit in a long time, but everyone knows who Alice Cooper is because of his influence on pop culture and the big songs he had in the '70s. . . We're in the early stages of telling the story of his career. We're probably going to focus in on his early years up to his comeback in the '80s. We're exploring a different stylist approach with this film. It won't be talking heads; it's going to be more of an archival and animated journey through his career. He's such a rich visual artist, it makes so much sense to try and do it in a different way. I think we're just a little bit sick of doing talking head interviews, to be honest [laughs], after doing 300 of them for 'Metal Evolution'. So it's really the story of Alice's career from the '60s right up to the '80s and everything he went through - the ups and the downs, battles with alcoholism, being raised in a Christian family, rebelling against that but then coming back to faith later in his career, and moving from town to town, and trying to find his place."
