Led Zeppelin: "Reunion Is Unlikely", Says "Celebration Day" Director Dick Carruthers

The director behind Led Zeppelin's new concert movie "Celebration Day" has told Contactmusic.com that any future reunion is unlikely as the project merely captured a magical musical moment in time.

In 2007 the band came together to honour late mentor Ahmet Ertegun in London and they asked video director and frequent collaborator Dick Carruthers to shoot the one-off gig and beam images onto screens set up at the O2 Arena.

Years later, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones opted to dig the footage out of the band's vaults and take a look.

Carruthers says, "As John Paul Jones says, five years is five minutes in Zeppelin time... There's a band who, if they wanna sit on something until the time is right, they will. They're not hurried by any of the commercial pressures that might apply to another band.

"All that happened was several years later, there was just a phone call and they said, 'Well, can we have a look at it then? Let's get the stuff out and let's have a look at it.'

"So we had two viewing days and we showed them what you call a line cut... and they were pretty blown away. I hadn't really seen the footage either and we realised it was something very special indeed."

Deep Purple: Don Airey On Deep Purple And Jon Lord

An interesting chat with rather rarely interviewed Don Airey have appeared on Hungarian ekultura.hu before the start of current Don’s solo tour.

On his solo career:

ekultura.hu: What happened after your second album with Deep Purple? What prompted you to launch a new solo career?

Don Airey: Ed van Zijl from Mascot Records offered me a record deal – I think he was fed up with just signing guitar players to his label. There was a gap in Purple’s schedule so I wrote some songs around the theme of astronomy, (a hobby of mine), booked studio time and musicians and went and made a record (Light in the Sky).

On Jon Lord and Deep Purple:

ekultura.hu: On a totally different note, how did the death of Jon Lord affect you personally?

Don Airey: I lost someone whose playing and quintessential Englishness I admired immensely, and who over the last ten years had been kindness itself to my tech son Mike, and myself. We were in the middle of recording the new DP album in Nashville when the awful news about Jon came through. It was difficult to get anything done for the next couple of days.

ekultura.hu: How does your solo project relate to what Deep Purple is doing now? Will it in any way have an impact on the music of the new album of the band?

Don Airey: It is separate - a whole different vibe! There is nothing in the world quite like Deep Purple I have to say.

Steve Vai: Breaks Down "The Story of Light"; "I Did My Best To Create A Record That Is True To My Evolution", Says Steve Vai

Guitar World has posted their full interview with guitar legend Steve Vai from the September issue on their official website. An excerpt is available below:

By Alan Di Perna

Technically, The Story of Light is the second installment of Vai’s Real Illusions trilogy, which began with the Reflections album in 2005. The Story of Light takes the form of 12 dazzling guitar compositions that portray visions and realizations experienced by different characters in Vai’s narrative when they gaze into a reflecting pond that’s central to the plot. It’s essentially Vai’s take on the magic mirrors and enchanted ponds of mythology, fairy tales, sci-fi and other stories - symbolic portals between the ordinary world and a realm of sprit, imagination and self discovery.

“Throughout the story,” Vai says, “what happens is people come into this place where they look into this reflecting pond. And when they look into it they see these different layers of themselves. They start seeing various actions they performed, they see their past lives, they have these realizations and epiphanies. Then they finally experience the core of who they are for a moment.”

Vai drew some pretty scalding criticism for the abstruse conceptual abstractions of the first Real Illusions installment, and he isn’t exactly insensitive to criticism. But he also came of age amid the pomp and circumstance of the Seventies prog-rock era, a time when lengthy concept albums based around spiritual themes were not at all unusual. This time out, though, Vai has chosen to tell his story more through instrumental music than songs with lyrics, with very rewarding results. The rock instrumental has always been his métier anyway. And thanks to Vai’s uncanny command of the electric guitar, amplification, effects and all that goes with them, listeners will feel The Story of Light’s emotions far more palpably than they will grasp its story line. His guitar conjures the epic bliss and vast unfolding vistas of spiritual awakening, the anguish of modern life’s soul-crushing rat race, the terror of apocalyptic cataclysm and the heartbreak of betrayal. The story itself? The grand concept? Like any true spiritual seeker, Vai isn’t unduly attached.

“A lot of people won’t care at all,” he says. “And that’s fine. I don’t care. It’s just an added bonus if somebody is interested in exploring that kind of stuff. And I did my best to create a record that is true to me, true to my evolution, and something I think that the people who have been following me will get a kick out of.”

Focus: "Focus X"; New Studio Album Out In November; Cover Artwork Unveiled

Legendary progressive rock veterans Focus are set to release their new studio album, "Focus X", on November 5th via Eastworld Recordings.

With their unique progressive rock, Focus manifested themselves at the start of the 70s as the most successful and the most appreciated of all the Dutch pop-rock exports. The band is fronted by founder and musical genius Thijs van Leer. Their hits include the instrumentals, "Hocus Pocus", "House Of The King", and "Sylvia", and their timeless albums include "Moving Waves", "Focus 3" and "Hamburger Concerto".

A new Focus era has arrived. There is a rejuvenated passion in the new compositions that adorn the new album "Focus X", which features a full scale Roger Dean painting on the cover.

Thijs van Leer commented: “It’s a thrill to have finally completed Focus X; we are all ecstatic and looking forward to playing the new material on the forthcoming Focus X Tour.”

This album - and the following gigs - will surprise the loyal fans. They will hear once again all the classic Focus tunes and they will be surprised at the strength and depth of the new material.

"Our music is evolution, not revolution", Thijs van Leer once said about the music of Focus.

After a comeback which resulted in the well received albums "Focus 8" and "Focus 9", the band is now back on the frontline, with a fantastic lineup. Also back on the drums is Pierre van der Linden, who is internationally renowned for his rhythmic skills, and is still a defining factor in the Focus sound. Bassist Bobby Jacobs, who stems from a well-acclaimed Dutch musical family and guitarist Menno Gootjes, who participated in Focus at an earlier stage, completes the band's current lineup.
